Raymond Mathis began exploring his craft when he worked as a farrier, using the fire in the back of his truck to create his first pieces of art. In 1988, he moved into his first studio in Bucks County, Pennsylvania creating work from his original designs using centuries-old techniques. In 1994 Mathis honed his craft at the Vulkanschmiede and the International Teaching Center for Metal Design in Aachen, Germany, where he studied under renowned master smith Manfred Bredohl. He then spent time researching the iron craftsmanship of Europe while traveling through Germany, Belgium, France and Italy. His projects range from commissioned sculpture, interior and garden furniture, lighting, and hardware to commercial signage, gates, railings, and liturgical metalwork. Working in a variety of materials such as steel, copper, bronze, stainless steel, stone, and hand-blown glass, Mathis collaborates not only with private clients but with interior designers, architects, landscape professionals, and public art committees. In addition to receiving several awards in juried exhibitions and for historic preservation, his work has been featured in House Beautiful, Philadelphia Magazine and many Bucks County regional publications.
